We love hearing success stories from iD Tech alumni. They remind us of the power of technology education. They inspire us. And they encourage us to keep offering awesome summer tech camps.
We’ve been following Rebecca Garcia for several years. The former iD Tech Camps alumna is now an entrepreneur and coder who uses her skills to provide free tech resources to underprivileged youth. Through CoderDojo NYC (the nonprofit she co-founded), Rebecca hosts monthly workshops that teach students about coding, website design, app development, and other technology topics. Rebecca was recently nominated for the Positive Impact Person of the Year Award by Hispanicize (and in conjunction with Prudential Financial) for the effect she's made on countless young people.
“I'm passionate about empowering other people to see technology as a creative tool to build their dreams. I was inspired by seeing just what people (both young and old) can do with a nudge in the right direction. I don't believe that everyone needs to become a programmer or engineer, but rather that technology is a great skill to have.” —Rebecca Garcia
How did Rebecca foster her passion for coding, engineering, and website design? She attributes iD Tech with passionately igniting her curiosity.
iD Tech summer programs encourage students to take initiative and ask questions when learning about the power of technology and STEM education. At iD Tech Camps, Rebecca discovered how technology could be used to open doors and create new possibilities for her and others.
“Two weeks at iD Tech Camps changed my life. Being surrounded by so many passionate people who shared similar interests blew my mind. I was introduced to the idea of technology as a fun and exciting career, and not some lofty idea just for engineers hiding in a lab.” —Rebecca Garcia
After realizing the value of technology education at camp, Rebecca wanted to extend that opportunity to children from all walks of life; she wanted to create opportunities for underprivileged children to experience a valuable opportunity like she did at iD Tech.
“By creating CoderDojo NYC we've been able to provide the opportunity to experience STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) to over 2,500 youth in a fun, creative, and collaborative way with inspiring mentors and role models. We hope to not only continue to encourage more youth into STEM, but to also provide the foundation for valuable computational thinking skills that will allow them to pursue their passions.” —Rebecca Garcia
What Students Learn at iD Tech
Whether your child is an aspiring coder, app developer, filmmaker, or game designer, iD Tech will connect your child with like-minded peers to promote collaboration and innovation, sparking an authentic, curious passion for technology and STEM education. For instance, our video editing courses focus on creativity, teamwork, and project management. During a one-week session, students in these courses can learn to:
- Prepare a storyboard and shot list
- Use color temperature and color theory
- Utilize non-linear editing techniques
- Implement lighting and cinematography techniques
- Use a professional industry camcorder
- Use Adobe Premiere
We set the bar with small groups of students per instructor, providing the most personalized experience for your child—every time. Whether your child attends one of our New York summer camp locations or one of our 150+ prestigious campuses like Stanford in the Bay Area, Caltech, or NYU, they will be fully immersed in the curriculum and get 1-on-1 instruction from top instructors.
More than 235,000 students have participated in our summer programs, and that number continues to grow annually. Like Rebecca, campers come to iD Tech for many different reasons—but their takeaways are very similar. They walk away with a strong set of 21st-century skills, greater self-confidence, and the direction needed to apply these skills in their everyday lives. So while their success stories are inspiring to us, we aren't surprised to hear that our awesome campers have taken their camp knowledge to the next level to accomplish BIG dreams.
