Torso & Head
With a pencil, have your little artist lightly sketch a design of the character's head and torso on the template.
Pay attention to the direction and layout of the template face while they draw. To assist, take a look at the example below to see how the template compares to the final folded version:

It might also help to print out multiple copies of the template for your kids to practice with. They can use a pencil to plan out the connecting face lines, and then cut and fold the template to see if the lines match up!
Arms & Legs
Next, have them lightly sketch a design for the character's arms and legs on the template, and then color however they'd like.

If the arms have sleeves, make sure kids use the same color as the shirt or jacket that will be designed for the torso. For the legs, don't forget to draw the character's shoes or feet.
Cutting & Folding
These instructions are intended for parents or teachers helping their kids or students. If you're not an adult, stop here and find adult supervision.
1. Once it's time to cut, help your kids cut along the outer lines of each template. Importantly, when they start cutting out the template, be sure to cut around the gray flaps on the outer edges—don't cut them off! They'll need these to fold inward, and to glue the sides of the character's parts together.

2. Fold all of the paper flaps inward so they rest against the back of the template.
3. Fold and press the template at the edge seams. The back of the fingernail is useful in pressing on edge folds for sharp corners.

4. Use tape or glue to carefully connect the inner edges of each part of the character.
And voila!
