Mission Mars: Space Flight with Kerbal

  • Price: Starting at $1,049
  • Age: Ages 10-12
  • Skill Level: Beginner-Advanced
  • Format: iD Tech Camps | Small-Group, On-Campus
  • Duration: Weeklong program, 8 hours per day

About This Course

3...2...1...Blastoff! Prepare to explore the cosmos and launch your virtual rocket into space! You’ll calculate fuel economy and dive into the atmosphere using physics and orbital mechanics to navigate the vast unknowns of space. With Kerbal Space Program, you’ll build your own space-flight technology. The last thing you want to do is blow up a rocket, but with aerodynamics and orbital physics you might just have to break a few eggs before you make it. There’s something for everyone whether you’re a veteran fleet captain or new cadet. Use problem-solving skills to get your rocket through Earth’s atmosphere and carefully land on faraway moons and planets, all in one piece.

Topics Covered

  • Learn fundamentals of rocket building and space flight
  • Study physics and orbital mechanics to travel to different planets
  • Use aerodynamics and problem solving to keep your Kerbal safe
  • Create and forge your own path through space

Course Format

This course is part of a weeklong summer camp running Monday through Friday. Learning sessions will be held in a lab on an inspiring university campus. Your child will be placed within a small group and guided by an experienced instructor. Daily schedules are balanced and allow for outdoor and recreational activities. Day and overnight options are available based on location.

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience.

Students will learn the basics of Kerbal Space Program and launch into suborbital flight after gathering research for the trip.

As students progress, they’ll learn to push their spacecraft’s design even further and launch into orbit around their home planet.

Students will reach the depths of space by learning how to transfer orbits and experience their first Mun landing.

As they work through their campaign, students will employ their skills to focus on their own goals and adventures, exploring any corner of space they wish to visit!

Set off on the final mission! To wrap up the week, students will showcase their exciting discoveries (and explosions) in a montage video created in OBS.

Portfolio-Boosting Diploma & Transcript

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive an official iD Tech diploma and course transcript outlining the skills they learned over the course of the week.

FAQ

This program allows students to simulate building their very own rocket, completing their flight module training, blasting off into space, and bringing their rocket back to Earth.

This course allows students to learn in a hands-on way what it takes to make it to outer space. By combining physics, robotics, and other problem solving skills, kids can step into astronaut’s shoes and take technology to new heights.

While we are a tech program with the goal of transforming your child’s interests into real-world STEM skills, we are also a summer camp. Simply put, camp is a balance of learning and fun! Students learn in small groups in labs on a prestigious college campus and from expert instructors who are trained to inspire and engage.

Day camps kick off with icebreakers and team-building before jumping into coursework for most of the morning. When it’s time for lunch, your child will walk from the computer lab to the dining hall as they take in the beauty of campus. Students return to the learning labs in the afternoon for more coursework, followed by an afternoon break where they will have the chance to take part in outdoor game time and more campus discovery before wrapping up with instruction!

Overnighters work until dinner, and are then off to create deeper connections and memories while gaming, watching movies, and more. All together, days and nights are filled with learning and adventure that builds lifelong friendships.

Yes, this course is designed for beginner to advanced students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace. Instructors are trained to be in tune with students’ unique needs and provide a personalized learning experience.

In addition to valuable tech skills, kids and teens leave camp with new relationships, resilience, critical thinking opportunities, and an even greater love for tech (if that’s possible!).

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive a transcript outlining everything they learned over the week. They’ll also take home an iD Tech t-shirt, water bottle, and a USB with their course project files, along with access to installation and setup guides so they can continue working at their own pace.

Yes! You can register today for as little as $250 per student, and pay the balance in convenient monthly installments. You can save $50 by registering for multiple sessions, and you can earn $25 in credit for each new friend referral (your friend saves $25 when they sign up too!).

As courses frequently sell out, we recommend registering early to secure your child’s spot. You can make unlimited changes - with no fees - up to 14 days before the start of your session. If you need to cancel, you will receive a refund of the amount paid, less the payment plan fee (if applicable) and the deposit of $250 per week. No refunds are provided for cancellations made within 14 days of the start of your session.

If your child will be bringing a phone to camp, they’ll be able to access their device to update you on their adventures and take selfies with their new friends during break times.

While many kids can’t stop talking about their days at camp, others are kids of few words. Our camp staff are here to help, taking pictures of campers in action! Our photos page is regularly updated to showcase all of the fun taking place at camp.

During our Friday Family Showcase, loved ones get to see their camper’s final project while interacting with camp staff and learning about the week, skills gained, and more.

With online options including virtual camps, teen academies, and private lessons, there is a program that fits your child’s interest, skill level, goals, and importantly, schedule. Inspiring instructors, customized curriculum, and topics your child can’t get enough of—sound familiar? Everything there is to love about our in-person summer camps, taught online, live by our elite instructors. Learn more
